Recommended disk imaging software?

Hi folks,

I have number of dualboot XP/Fedora machines here at work, and they're all a standard build that we use for development. I'm looking to make disk images, so that I can have one master image that ideally I can restore over a network.

Other than Ghost, what's the best bit of software out there for this? I'm looking at Acronis True Image, but it doesn't seem to have the best Linux support.

Thanks!

This being a Linux forum I have to mention PartImage

Whether it will meet your needs or not I couldn't tell you. It says the NTFS Support isn't all that hot..

Acronis probably has the best linx and windows support combined for what you are looking for. It's certainly better than Ghost. Partimage is OK for certain things but I've had problems restoring NTFS and I wouldn't trust it in an enterprise environment. Besides, partimage will not clone an entire drive which is what you appear to want to do.

Unless I've misunderstood what you're looking to do, the dd command will create images of disks/partitions from the command line. There's an excellent thread on it here:

And the wiki's pretty good for the basics:

Ditto dd---the ultimate power tool. Once you understand how it works, it is totally powerful and easy to use. Just don't screw up--it has no "undo" feature....
