received signal 11

hey everyone!

Every time i try to install Mandrake9.0, i get an error just after the "loading program into memory" screen:

install ended abnormally :-( --received signal 11

this is followed by a load of other stuff about kill signals and unmounting drives. Does anyone know what this means, and what i can do to stop it happening? once i have received this error once, it seems to crop up again every time i reset, but not always when i switch off and back on again.

also, when i have managed to get further into the install, it seems to hang when installing some packages. i've been informed by the guy who lent me the CDs that they are working--he has used them before successfully. is this in any way related to the problem above?

thanks a lot in advance for your help! i'm completely lost

Signal 11 means the installer crashed. I have no idea what might cause that, but you're best reporting it to mandrake. I suspect you have a wierd machine.

Sig 11 is a segmentation fault me thinks.

My best guess is bad memory. Its either that or a severe bug in the code but since it is letting you get to different points in the install, but since the installer keeps getting to different points in the install, I'm going to place my bet on the former.

Look here

Yeah it does sound like bad ram or some dodgy hardware. What chipset is on the NIC, and what sound chips etc are on the system?

thanks for the help! i've been having trouble with memory in windows (it was corrupting my registry ). i fiddled with my RAM settings in the BIOS, and changed the CAS latency from 2.5 (the value that crucial quoted) to 3.0, which has apperently solved the problem completely

now mandrake is all installed, and i am happy!

and i'll see you at lunch tomorrow, mike

I'll see you tomorrow Have fun with Mandrake, I just installed Redhat 9 onto my new hard disk today and let me tell you - it owns completely. The new X mouse cursors look great, it's fast, Pheonix as a browser rocks etc etc. I have the perfect desktop now At least for a while until I screw it up again.

Anyway, I can show you how to get a proper Linux desktop some other time.

Its a serious memory issue, watch your system even after it has been installed look out for error with the kernel even though it will let you install it the problem may not be fixed, I ripped my hair out trying to get my system to work, I would keep getting these weird messages but I also had an ntfs hard drive mounted and at first I thought they were just issues with filenames or file structure but it ended up being the ram, if you keep getting kernel issues check your memory a memory swap might do the trick

7quarter, as the last post before you was on 05-11-2003, I don't think it's much of a problem anymore
