REALLY maximize app. in X (solved)

Ok, maybe this question might seem a little wierd but here goes.

In M$ Window$ , when i fly my mouse-pointer in the upper-right corner (without pointing exactly on the cross) and click I can close an application. But in every WM or DE i've tried under Linux i just can't do that. I mean, when I put my mouse-pointer in the upper-right corner i always need to go a little down and a little to the left before i can click the "cross" (to close the application).

It's a habbit for me in Windows but how can i do this in Linux and with what WM or DE ?

I hope you know what i mean and don't think it's a to STUPID/WIERD question

It's actually not all that weird. Habits are habits, after all

My immediate thought was that you'd p'bly need to either modify the placement or the relative size of the title bar buttons (or, and possibly better, eliminate the border around windows when they're maximized, i.e the way Windows does).

Anyhow, poking around a lot brought me to the conclusion that fvwm is probably your best bet for customizing title bar buttons and their relative widths, heights, mappings, all that jazz. If you're used to a windows/gnome/kde style desktop, fvwm will probably take some getting used to. However, it's clean, simple, has a very low memory footprint, is beautiful, and is customizable to a ridiculous extent if you're not afraid to get your hands dirty (I expect there's quite a few GUI's existant to help out along the way anyhow). I use WindowMaker, which is pretty similar, and it's about as close to desktop nirvana as I've achieved thus far ^.^

To business:
What appears to be a decent explanation of title bar buttons, the ~/.fvwm2rc configuration file and the ButtonStyle command can be found here.

A page which had some nifty customizations (like double-clicking to close a window..very handy) was here, and might provide some reference material.

The official fvwm home page was linked above, but is here again for reference' sake: www.fvwm.org. There's a lot of sample configuration files, and probably IRC and forum links or something like that also.

I freely confess that my understanding of the all of the available fvwm commands is almost nonexistent, but I daresay there's someone around here who is competant to explain syntax, etc.

Hope that helps!

Absolutely not, i've been using Linux for about half a year now and i've been reading A LOT Made a web/mail/sql/ftp-server etc etc etc. (www.nukey.nl)

So now it's time to get Linux to my desktop, i've got all the apps I need under linux, so that's not the problem

What i want for my Xwindow

It shouldn't look to much like Windows
KDE is nice, but to big, i want something fast.
Configurable

Those fvwm screenshots look nice, but a whole lot different that when i start my slackware 10.0 fvwm session :P hehe.

fluxbox is fast, and from what i've heard also very configurable.

Anyway, maybe i should take an even deeper look into some WM, but if anyone has experiance with the mouse-thingie please let me know

Thanx for the info

It's just a bug in whatever WM you're using: report it to the developers and hopefully they'll fix it

I don't think he's talking about a bug - it's not that the X button isn't working, just that it's not quite where he reflexively expects it to be.

Sure, the WM is ignoring Fitts law. That's usually considered to be a bug.

For the record, nukey, what windowmanager *are* you using?

And mhearn - Fitt's Law is quite the interesting principle. Thanks for pointing me to it!

Thanx,

But hey, i've just updated KDE to 3.4.0 and my "problem" is solved (for KDE at least).
I picked the default KDE style and now i can throw my mouse in the upperright corner and click to close an app.
