qmail: pop before smtp - HOW?

Hi guy!
On a Red Hat 9 box I have successfully installed and configured the following:
QMAIL + OPENSSL + APACHE + PHP + MYSQL + VPOPMAIL (with MySQL accounts) + COURIER-IMAP + SQUIRRELMAIL (with MySQL prefs/addrbook), QMAIL-SCANNER + CLAM Antivirus

using this wonderful tutorial:
http://www.pipeline.com.au/staff/mb...mail-server.htm

Now my problem is: I'd like to allow relaying also to dialup users (these ones abviously don't belong to my network).
I read that I can force a pop-before-smtp authentication (so that they are bound to give a username/password even when they only want to send emails).

How can I do it with qmail (and with the other applications I mentioned above) ?

Or (as an alternate) how can I do an SMTP-AUTH ? (even if I don't like this fix very much).

Thanks in advance,
Byeeeeeeeeeeee

Thanks david_ross for your kind suggestion but I'm looking for a solution using the applications I have installed and mentioned above.
I read that to have a pop-before-smtp I need to put --enable-roaming-users=y option in vpopmail configuration.
I'm asking: is it enough?
Or should I make other modifications ? (i.e. deleting rcpthosts?)

Thanks in advance!
