Program to convert DVDs to Avi (DivX / Xvid)

How do I convert a DVD into a comressed avi file (divX or Xvid?) that I can burn onto one or two CDs?

I am no expert in video editing nor linux.

The DVDs I want to copy have been created using Pinnacle Studio on Windows XP.
I have debian installed with KDE, K3b, and w32codecs.
