When I was an (unhappy) Windows user, I was a regular visitor to nme.com, where you can listen to streamed music. Since I have migrated to Linux (Mandriva 2007) I can no longer use the site media player for audio files (video files are fine) - which uses Windows media player - because the mplayerplugin either hangs or takes so long to buffer that I give up. As far as I know, all the codecs are in place. Here is a copy of what I get in [I]aboutlugins[I] in Firefox:

There are a number of distributions where the codecs end up in the wrong place: they should be under firefox/plug-ins but for some reason they end up under mozilla/plug-ins.
Also check the preferences item by right-clicking mplayer; this will allow you to select the codec(s) that will be used.
I had the same problem....the mplayerplug-in would open but the video failed to stream....it would just keep re-loading.
I right clicked on one of these never starting videos and chose configure from the pop-up menu...I chose x11 for the video output and oss for the audio output...left everything else as is...
Of course, you also need the w32codecs in your firefox/plugins directory as stated by jay73
HOORAY ...the videos now play....the output selections may be different for your computer....just keep trying different ones and you may get lucky like I did...
I've looked in the directories, and it doesn't look to me as though there are the required codecs. I'm not very good at this sort of thing, so I'll list what I find. It does look to me that there is a link to mplayer, but that there are only video codecs. Anyway, here is what I've got:
When I right click on the link, I get nothing about codecs that I can see
I have tried VLC, but with no joy. I try entering the url directly in file-open network stream HTTP/HTTPS/FTP/MMS - but nothing happens. Perhaps this isn't the correct procedure?
Thanks for this link, joslar. It looks excellent, but unfortunately my Spanish isn't good enough for me to fully profit from it!
I un-installed the mplayerplugin and replaced it with version 3.35 (version 3.4 isn't yet available in rpm - I'm not keen on compiling). However, it actually worked worse than the older version as I couldn't open video links. I've re-installed the previous version and everything's back to how it was.
Then I fell on this little guide on this very forum: http://wiki.linuxquestions.org/wiki/MPlayer
I installed mozplugger and, indeed, it does work better. When I go to the site where you can listen to streamed albums http://www.nme.com/, the first song of an album plays. This means that it isn't a codec problem, otherwise nothing would happen at all. Moreover, with mozplugger, the file opens very fast. However, it only plays the first song on the album and then stalls. Does anyone know how to get it to play the others? I have read somewhere that Xmms needs to be installed to do this. I have installed this on my computer but to no avail. Perhaps I need to make a link between Mplayer and Xmms?
Thanks for the screenshots - that was very helpful. Sorry I haven't replied - I've had other Linux problems to sort out!
Now, I'm nearly there, but not quite. I've copied the URL as you've shown in your screenshot, and I can see now why it didn't work before - I simply wasn't right-clicking in the right place. Now the trouble is with xmms. I don't see a window like the one you've shown me. The closest I get is when I right click on the player, choose play then play file. However, I cannot paste the url here, as nothing happens when I right click. The only option is to past the URL into Writer and then copy out the address manually. This is hardly efficient, I'm clearly doing something wrong, and anyway nothing plays.
well, it isn't that your plugin is too old--i'm using 3.21, and the nme radio works fine for me (cool site!). my ~/.mozilla/plugins directory is:
flashplayer.xpt
libflashplayer.so
libjavaplugin_oji.so
mplayerplug-in-gmp.so
mplayerplug-in-qt.so
mplayerplug-in-rm.so
mplayerplug-in.so
mplayerplug-in-wmp.so
i don't have a ~/.firefox directory. have you tried right-clicking the url and just trying mplayer from the console? running mplayer http://screlay-dtc0L-5.shoutcast.com:8032/ i get the following:

i've found that streams are usually more reliable when run with mplayer from the command line. hth.
Thanks very much for your reply mma8x, that's very useful indeed. I never would have had the idea of using mlplayer in the command line.
However, I've just tried it and it doesn't work for me. I have downloaded the w32codec-all package, but mplayer appears to have trouble finding the codecs. Here is a copy (I've included my command so you can see if I've launched it properly):

I've just realised I did something stupid : I put the url as nme.com, which isn't a stream link.
This time I chose a stream via the media player and copied the url - but it still doesn't work. This is what I get:
Code:

well, you're using the wrong stream i think. all of the ampersands (&) in your command line are breaking up that line into separate commands, and attempting to run them (the non-sensical commands) in the background. try:
mplayer http://screlay-dtc0L-5.shoutcast.com:8032/
and see what happens. btw, are you running all of this from a root console?
OK, we have a result! I copied and pasted the command you gave in a root terminal and nme radio began! Great! But, we're not there yet! What I like about this website is the nme media player, where you have a choice of albums that you can listen to simply by clicking the appropriate link. First you register, then you're away! Trouble is, this works for me in Windows but not in Linux
The url I pasted yesterday was, in fact, the one that I got from mplayer after clicking on one of the links. I followed the same procedure that joslar suggested. If I simply let the file play, I usually get nothing at all or, if I do get something, I can only listen to the first song on the album. Can using mplayer in the command line resolve this problem? If so, what is the procedure?

Dont know if this helps but... I use the KMplayer plugin (note the K)and have both Mplayer and Xine installed. Kmplayer i have defaulted to use
xine (right click on media screen window-> configure Kmplayer) and I have no problems with the 'on demand' media player.
Streaming Radio is opened in Amarok automatically. Now the ? is do you use KDE or Gnome, KMplayer being a KDE plug. I have never had any
satisfactory results with Mplayer doing anything for the last 3-4 years Xine on the otherhand has Never failed.
P.s. thanks for the (to me) new site. the Vids even look good full screen.
hard to tell exactly why you're not getting the right streams, since my plugin is working correctly. anyway:
mplayer http://195.93.22.157/timeinc/uk/ipcm...v?MSWMExt=.asf
is the stream i get through the media player.
