The kernel that came with Fedora Core 1 (2.4.22-(something)) was not supporting load in modules (which i needed support for to install some new drivers). So i decided that now was as good a time as any to learn how to compile a new kernel for my system. I downloaded the latest kernel (2.6.3), and followed the instructions from a handful of online sources and the README to complete a successful build and re-boot. The problem is that now with the new kernel i have a few problems:
sound does not work
USB does not work
i thought while configuring the kernel before i built it that i had selected the right modules to be built in for it to support USB but i really didn't know what i was doing, i was just trying to learn through experiance.
Can anyone help me with this? Maybe tell me what i should have done in the configuration phase? Or how i can fix this problem right now (with out compiling a new kernel again)? Let me know what information you need and i can post it. For now:
Dell Inspiron 8100 laptop
256RAM
all of my USB comes from one main powered USB hub i have plugged into my laptop.
eek, compiling kernels on systems that use those "special" kernels (non-standard ones) can be a bit tricky (the special kernels have calls that pertain to the way the system is built)
it would probably be best for you to download the kernel source for that 2.4.22-something kernel from fedora's website, cd into the kerne source dir (usually /usr/src/linux-xxxxxx) and enable loadable modules support in that
i guess it's true then that fedora doesn't enable loadable module support; though that is extremely strange...

Yeah, i was using MEPIS and was having so many problems because of their non-standard kernel that i gave up on it and decided to try Fedora

By this do you mean that i re-build the kernel from the source that came with Fedora, and in the process of re-building it enable loadable modules? or is there a way that (say with a fresh install from the Fedora Disks), modify the kernel to allow loadable modules (without re-building the kernel)?

I was pretty annoyed about this, a friend reccomended it as a very versitile build but... yeah, we'll see about that
look, i know its really cool to post links to tutorials and crap because it makes you feel so smart for showing the newbie how to look things up for himself or whatever it is that gives you wood... but really i've been over several tutorials and googled till my freaking touch pad is slick with the sweat of my fingers... so someone with something relivant to say might actually be able to help me, or show me to something that will help me wth my problem.
why did my usb stop working after the upgrade (what in the config file did i not do?)?
and why did my sound stop working as well?
when you recompiled your kernel, were you using the old configuration (or did fedora not come with a config file?)
it seems to me that you either didn't include all the options necessary in your kernel config or you didn't install the modules
go back into menuconfig and check off all your major areas (sound, usb) and make sure your devices and options you want are selected (a bit tedious at first, but it only needs to be done once)
remember, when building a 2.4.x kernel, do
make menuconfig
make dep
make clean
make bzImage
make
(optional make install if your system supports it)
make modules
make modules_install
