Problems after kernel compile

i just compiled my kernel to 2.6.5 from 2.4.22
i have a generic ethernet card (macronix ... something of that nature) and when i boot up to 2.6.5 its not detecting the card. the other problem i'm having is with the SB 14 sound card. its not detecting that either. i've recompiled my kernel at least 3 times with no avail, switching options here and there. can somebody please tell me what options to leave as module or as a function in when i'm doing menuconfig. i'm at a total loss here.
thanks for any help, in advance !
