I use an USB mouse which gets mapped to /dev/input/mice with the nice /dev/mouse symlink...

ok...

i downgraded to slack 9.0 and installed libiconv, lots of fonts, and used an xinitrc symlink and now everything is working...well sort of.

Code:
cd /etcX11/xinit
rm xinitrc
ln -s xinitrc.xfce4 xinitrc
when i startxfce4 i get an error message in a box stating that there was an error in the panel or a problem in the panel or something like that. so i clicked ok and it keeps poping up. any suggestions? i tried uninstalling and reinstalling but its still the same. i may just go with another gui. i dont like kde or gnome, they are both too much like windows. xfce seems more clean cut and, to me, looks a whole lot better.

You don't need to compile or download... this stuff is on the Slack cd (look in the 'l' directory). And you don't need to do all that stuff with the xinitrc, you can use the 'xwmconfig', then just run 'startx'.

i can get xfce to start now but its just a white bar at the top with a black background. nothing else. the panel keeps crashing and i hit ok. then a few minutes later it does it again. the log said something like fonts couldnt be loaded. check fonts.config.

Code:
-
	<!--
 /etc/fonts.conf file to configure system font access
-->
-
	<fontconfig>
-
	<!--

	The intent of this standard configuration file is to be adequate for
	most environments. If you have a reasonably normal environment and
	have found problems with this configuration, they are probably
	things that others will also want fixed. Please send any suggested
	changes to fonts@xfree86.org so that future releases can include
	such changes.

	Note that the normal 'make install' procedure for XFree86 is to
	replace any existing fonts.conf file with the new version. Place
	any local customizations in local.conf which this file references.
