problem with VLC

Hi, I'm using Debian Lenny - the latest edition. I have installed KDE 4.1.3, and also VLC Media Player. I have been using Slackware for a while before, but VLC couldn't play HD movies in the same way as in Windows. In Windows Vista I have installed K-Lite Codec Pack - latest version and everything goes fine, even more than with Media Player Classic. In Slackware I have installed all codecs and dependencies listed in wiki.videolan.org and still it couldn't play the movies in the normal as in Windows. Also problems arised when I was using root account which I mainly used. I tried also Xine -it performed better, but still not like this in Windows. Now I'm using Debian Lenny, installed with netinst CD. There is some Dragon Player, which is not performing so well also. I'm using not root account in KDE 4.1.3, only in the Konsole. My videocard is GeForce 6600, I have installed driver. I'll search if there are all codecs needed for VLC, Debian has nice package managers, but I'm asking is there any chance I can play HD movies well in Linux as in Windows, or it's not worth searching and installing codecs.
Thank, you.

hi

linux can not play hd movies as well as windows....is not quite descriptive enough to research the errors.

could you post the errors you see in attempting to play the movie....or is that you have patchy sound or jerking video?...got the idea?

2) since you mention Debian, its possible you are using the open source vidoe card driver and not the closed source driver.

are you against trying the closed source driver from nvidia?

3) As you mention root and non-root user....its is always safer to play multimedia as a normal user, but your distro may not have set up the appropiate permissions for you?
Since I do not know your errors as yet...forgive me for mentioning you need to be a member of the video and audio groups

to check run...as a normal user

Code:
groups
you may get something like
YOURname dialout cdrom floppy audio dip video plugdev users fuse scanner netdev powerdev

Thank you, I've already added users to /etc/group file, sound is playing and also video in VLC, but problems are with getting codecs. HD Movies are not playing well, sound is good, but video - it's jerking. Problems are with the codecs and plugins for vlc. I just have installed Mandriva and with urpmi downloaded vlc from unregistered repository and also some package - win32-codecs. When I performed installation it asked me if to install some proprietary driver for my video card and of course I said yes. In Debian I'm using that downloaded from NVIDIA. The biggest problems for me are the codecs. Every codec iif I download from debian repos it's debian package, but still there are codecs, which are with source code only, and if I compile them I don't know did they replace these already installed. When I try to compile VLC 0.9.8a I get error - cannot locate libgl.so - possibly linked with opengl. I have installed all versions of opengl packages - some for ruby, python perl...

I am still not sure what the error is but pretending its only codec try this

http://www.debian-multimedia.org/pool/main/w/w32codecs/

at some stage you may have a conflict in how and where you build codecs so you may think about (on debian) removing stuff and starting again.

I gather then you play all the dvds and in Debian its just jerking video?

Thank you, movies are playing well know, but I need to remove codecs. Maybe I'll try apt-get autoremove...
