hi everybody
early i installed slackware and its work good ,
but i have problem with display .. like when am try reboot or shutdown
the screen is going to black and dont do any thing ,,
and try to use ctrl+alt+f(x) ,, but also dosnt work ,
so any body can help me :-s
thnx all
If you think that X hangs, you can usually kill it with CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE that will start the graphical login again if you have a graphical manager like gdm, kdm, or xdm, or drop you into textmode console if you don't have any of those.
To reboot (usually as root) use command "reboot" to do a complete shutdown with poweroff use "shutdown -h now".
Unfortunately I can't guess what exactly happens on your system but it would be nice if you provided more information about your setup.
Are you using a specific video driver or just vesa?
I believe you can find that out in /etc/X11/xorg.conf in current Slackware.
What video chipset do you have? I believe nVidia and ATI both have automated driver installations that will also make the necessary changes to xorg.conf. This may not solve your black screen problem but it won't hurt.
Give us more information about your hardware.
Windows says my card is :
S3 graphics ProSavage DDR
i dont know how can i know it using linux
In console/terminal enter "lspci".
As far as I know there is a "savage" driver module included in most distros these days. Here is a xorg.conf with an S3 card, adapt the contents to your needs. http://www.snafu.org/t23/xorg.conf
Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection

but its appear other problem :-s
the screen is so Bright so can you help me to how can i control the color from xorg.conf
tnx ,,,
I'm not sure there is any particular means of controlling Bright or Contrast from xorg.conf, nor do I suspect that the savage or S3 drivers have any fancy features as such built in.
nVidia for example can use a tool one can download (nvidia-settings) which can, among other things, set color warmth, bright, contrast, etc, but again I don't know of a similar thing for the S3 device (that is not to say one doesn't exist though).
You may be limited to using the buttons, dials, or OSD menu on the monitor itself.
