problem with python

I have python 2.5 pygtk (I tried both source code and binary), pycairo, and pygobject.

Yet I can't import gtk, cannot import pygobject. I can't figure it out. What am I missing? What am I doing wrong? Any ideas or help out there?

By the way, all my packages are the most up to date.

You are not giving enough information to be able to answer that question.

Are you trying to install something and it isn't working?

Are you trying to code something and it isn't working?

How about some examples of the commands/codes you are using to help us help you!

I'm trying to install exaile and there are no slackware binaries. Funny enough the program passed make and make install however when I go to run it I get import errors.

So then I tried:
$ python
>> import gtk

And I still get the same error.

But it's not so much that I can't run exaile this could be that I can't run other python programs.

Two seperate issues to address here.

First: slackware binaries. If you can't find the binary for the app you want, make your own from the tarball.

There's a utility called Checkinstall. Get it and install it. When you want to install something, and can only find it in tarball, you unpack the tarball and run ./configure and make as usual. For the final step, you invoke checkinstall (as root) 'checkinstall make install'. Checkinstall will prompt your for some information, including the type to package you want to build (Debian, Slackware, or RPM). When it's done, you end up with the binary package you want to install. Install it, then save it somewhere in case of future need.

Second: python import. It's used to import modules, not entire API's. So, I'd suspect the import command you are using is at fault. Since you don't give specifics about the import errors, I can't give you anything more specific than that.

Google up copies of Dive into Python, and Byte of Python for more info on how to import python modules.
