Why are you installing on the command line? Use Synaptic.

Well, you should look for AUTOMATIX, it is a script that will install all those things without any fuss. It may be in Applications > Synaptic but if not, you'll have to google for it. Installing everything oneself is a bit more reliable but automatix is very useful when you find that too difficult.

Automatix is actively dangerous and I do NOT recommend it.

VLC and XMMS are supposedly both in the 'universe' repository. Check it and Multiverse in Software Sources, do an update in Synaptic, and then search.

Oh well, we recently had the whole discussion in another thread here on LQ. I think it's largely a matter of expert paranoia. I mean, extreme precaution is good in a sysadmin but that doesn't mean that their criteria apply to the average home user. As I said, manual install is probably more reliable but it's not as if automatix is going to eat up your system. Just don't install it if you need to run a server or if you're very concerned about security. And do a clean install of the next release instead of upgrading online.
