Question Problem installing gcc-4.0.2.tar.bz2


hi everyone
i m a complete newbie to linux and have a problem with a tarball i got from the net.

with fedora core 4 on my machine, i m wondering how to get my gcc-4.0.2.tar.bz2 working on my machine. i basically want to work on C and C++ development...the readme stuff i saw is no good...too lengthy and cryptic..
can someone please help me with this...

Since you don't have ane older version of gcc to compile the source you just downloaded, I would suggest downloading the rpm from fedoracore and install it that way. try:

http://mirror.web-ster.com/fedora/co....0.0-8.src.rpm

Or your fedora core mirror of choice.

then

Code:
rpmbuild --rebuild gcc-4.0.0-8.src.rpm
This will taylor the rpm to the kernel version you are using. (kernel source required) I belive it puts the new rpm in the /usr/src/redhat/RPMS directory. You will then need to install the rpm you just made.

Code:
rpm -Uvh gcc-4.0.0-8.rpm
