I'm a beginner in fedora
I try to use Fedora core 5 to play avi file, however it fail to open with totem
After that, i try to install xine and according to the error, I download and install all the file the xine needed before install it
(libfame, libdvdcss, aalib) and i successful install xine(maybe have error that I don't know).
I right-click the avi, there were no choose for me to open xine, and I back to the offical website and install the GUI, however the problem cannot be solve.
Open a terminal, and type "xine" or "xine&" if you don't want xine to close when you close the terminal.
Depending on which desktop environment you're using (KDE? gnome? other?), there may also be a 'run command' button in a menu somewhere. The same commands will work.
If you know how to create a shortcut/menu item, the executable file ('xine') will probably be in /usr/local/bin, /usr/X11R6/bin, or /usr/bin.
I recommend you set up a .repo file with freshrpms. Then just enter
Install this http://ftp.freshrpms.net/pub/freshrp....fc.noarch.rpm
then after you install that (with rpm -i freshrpms-release-1.1-1.fc.noarch.rpm)
yum install xine
while you're at it install mplayer

after I open /usr/local/bin, it work.
Thank you for your help.
Two more question,
How can I cap a screenshot of the film? It show a blue screen like windows(I can use Ctrl+I with windows media player to cap photo)
and how can i play the video file with .wmv without change the extension to .asf?
and how can i play the video file with .wmv without change the extension to .asf?
you don't have to change the extension of the file to asf , xine will play wmv file , i my self have the problem that xine don't play wmv3 even though i added the required codecs , i use mplayer to play it ....but it play any other wmv file , it's better that you use mplayer or gmplayer if you don't have it downloaded into your machine i recumend that you get it downloaded ...:-)
aaaa and one last thing , if you want to become linux expert start using the shell and it's commands rather than the graphical desktop enviroment , but it still OK if you have shortcut icon on your desktop or in the kde menu ...
and don't feel so bad because of asking primitive questions , every one in this forum started like that ....!
