Point of Sale with linux

Has anyone else tried using linux with point of sale software?
I know there is POS software available that will run on a linux platform. Has anyone here had any experience with this? What issues did you experience ? Were you still able to install card readers, interface with credit card processors, banks etc?
Any recommendations as far as which distro to use and which pos software to purchase will be greatly appreciated.
The specs on the hardware used are also of interest.

I don't have a recommendation except about how to search these forums. I did so because long ago I recall a thread where someone asked something I answered and what they ended up really looking for was POS software. So I tried to search for POS and Point of Sale. Didn't find that thread, but found some other ones with recommendations. Here's the search options I chose:

Advanced Search
Keywords: POS point of sale
At least 1 reply
Find posts from any date
And I only selected the Linux forums and Non* NIX forums

The thread I recall, the OP was writing software on their own because they couldn't find anything. Meanwhile there were some commercial recommendations on that thread. Sorry, I couldn't locate that particular one, it was many years ago.

Thanks for your reply. However I have searched the forums and have seen the posts you have mentioned. They didn't really give me the information I am looking for.
I know there is free ware and commercially available programs that will run on linux platforms.
I am looking for anyone that has run a business with any of the available software
Some of my concerns are interface with hardware such as touch screens, credit card readers, batching payments into bank accounts and PCI compliance issues.
Let me explain my challenge. I live in rural eastern Colorado and help a local convenience store owner with his I.T. needs. We set up his current POS system about five years ago with a leased Point of Sale system. The POS software was Micro Soft Dynamics POS 2009 embedded Windows XP pro. In true MS fashion The POS software is no longer supported by MicroSoft and while this version of XP still has limited support there are a lot of issues cropping up because of the "old" operating system.
I would like to help the owner get off the MS treadmill. The hardware while also out of date sill functions well and the owner would prefer not to have to replace the whole system.
Not one who enjoys reinventing the wheel I am looking for advice from someone who has also made the break from MS and could share the challenges they faced.

Well, I haven't. In the past, however, I have bookmarked a couple of POS things, and in case it helps in any way, here is what little I know:

There was once something called 'lemonpos'; the site www.lemonpos.org seems now to be a 'site squatting' type site, which has some links off in the direction of some pos-style things, but they don't really do it. If you are lucky, you get back to the same place, if not, you get something irrelevant (although I didn't try exhaustively - you may or may not want to go that far).

There was also once something called 'Floreant POS' It had been at 'floreantpos.com', but that now seems to redirect to someone's blog site, however http://www.floreantpos.org/ exists, but is supposedly obsolescent. There is now 'http://floreant.org/', which does look a bit more fresh in its design. If you are not interested in 'Restaraunt POS', even this won't be of much interest to you.

It all looks to me as if Open Source POS doesn't attract as much staying power as it might, although that might just be an erroneous impression based on very few data points.
