Ownership Problem


HI Guys,
Whenever I try to tar a file wiht the command

tar -zxvf <file name>
I get the follwoing message

Cannot change ownership to uid 500, gid 500: Operation not permitted

Any idea whats the cause

Thankx in advance...

Make sure the user your logged in as has permissions to untar the package and or the location your trying to untar it at.

man chmod
man chown
man chgrp

Try to untar it as root, if you can. If not, make sure that you listen to trickykid.
