file ownership problem

I am trying to install a software program. I am installing as root. The program installs, but the files are not owned by root. They have the user id and group id of a user that has been deleted.
Can anyone please tell me how this could be happening, what could be causing this.

Thanks

This might work:

chown root program. Insert the name of your program in place of the italics.

I have changed the ownership of the files to root, but I'm trying to figure out what could be causing this to happen in the first place so that I can correct it.

That's why I'm hoping that someone might have some ideas that is causing this.

When I initially installed the software program it didn't happen, everything was owned by root as it should've been. This only started after I had to reinstall the program.

Thanks
