=== Running /usr/lib/oss/bin/soundon ===
Install directory: /usr/lib/oss
Will use /usr/bin/ld for linking.

Cannot use the kbuild method
/lib/modules/2.6.3-7mdk/build/include/linux/version.h does not exist

**** Failed to compile the sndshield module ****

Cannot find the kernel include directory.
Set the KERNELINCLUDE variable and try again if you have the kernel
sources in a nonstandard place.
No sndshield module available.

I suppose the error begins at /lib/modules/... anyone know how to fix this? it's probably pretty easy but im just beginning to get the hang of linux. thanks a bunch

/dev/audio*: no such file or directory
/dev/sequencer: no such file or directory
/dev/music: no such file or directory
ERROR: Module osslinux does not exist in proc/modules

You already posted this yesterday - no need to crosspost or spam the board with the same message multiple times.

Now, what is soundon/sndshield? I have no idea, but I guess it's an OSS sound driver. Please tell us.

Second - from the messages it is quite clear that the script either doesn't find the correct kernel source directory, or you have it but haven't build the kernel from those sources (which is required for version.h to exist).

Is Alsa not an option?

Edit: According to your other posts you have an Audigy LS. That card is supported in Alsa 1.0.6 and later (but not earlier!) by the snd-audigyls module.

yea, alsa is an option. but when i try to install it, alsa, (since it doesn't automatically detect my sound card) i get an error about it can't find the kernel source and a file named "version.h".

Also, i think alsa is already installed, when i go services and hi the "start'" next to alsa I get the error "alsa driver isn't running" so im feeling pretty helpless at this point. any help would be terrific.

peace.

First off, Alsa needs the kernel source for the kernel you are currently running. The source needs to be configured as well, and if you grab the kernel source package from your distribution (as opposed to say a kernel.org mirror) you will probably have that version.h file (it doesn't exist until you have built a kernel from the source normally). The configure line you should use should probably be along the lines of ./configure --with-cards=audigyls.

When having installed the latest alsa-driver package you can probably just use the Alsa utilities and scripts already installed on your system to start and stop Alsa.

Ok, thanks man, I got the alsa stuff configured. However when i go back to services, ALSA still doesn't start, it says the following when I click start

Code:
Doing alsactl to store mixer settings... [OK]
Shutting down ALSA sound driver (version 1.0.2c): [OK]
Starting ALSA version 1.0.2c: emu10k1 (0) [ OK]
however, it still says "stopped"

This is also confusing because the driver version I downloaded was 1.0.6. but when i configure it, it didn't update. so that may be the problem as well.

thanks a lot for your help, im really grateful.

Edit: hmm i may have it working
I now get the following error when trying to run the alsamixer

Code:
function snd_ctl_open failed for default: no such device
i think i may just need to unmute my volume now but I cna't open alsamixer, aumix crashes, and kmix doesn't list any mixers.
