OpenOffice and dbase

Have tried every version of OpenOffice up to the present (1.1?) and have the same problem no matter what flavor of Linux I use. I have a data base that previously ran under Access. I brought it into StarOffice 5.2 and it runs fine. But when I try using OpenOffice - I can get the Table going ok and can even set up the "Form" but the problem comes up when I try to enter new data - it will not let me enter more than 30 characters, even though the imported data is brought in fine - the memo field goes more than 30 characters for existing records. Any suggestions? It has me baffled. Thanks in advance!!
