Whenever I try to listen to VIrgin Radio or Soundportal.at's streaming radios directly through XMMS, I can't connect. The only way I can listen is if I open Firebird and either click on the bookmarks I created for the URLs or if I go to their websites and execute from there. Anyone know of a fix for this or anything along those lines? I'd rather not have to open up Firebird each time I want to listen to music, because even Firebird takes a while to load on my ancient machine.
Not sure what you mean by 'play directly from' xmms. I open a website's stream and then save it as a playlist file in xmms. Then I just load the playlist if I don't feel like going to the site. I almost always have my browser open though.

I've tried doing this, and that's what I first tried. But whenever I clear the list and load it again later, it doesn't work. It also doesn't play if I choose Open Location or whatever, and I type in the URL. It says something about how it can't connect.
Edit: Followup:
I think it has to do with the fact that it tries to open external playlists.... Because trying to open things like http://www.kumm.org's radio station (University of Minnesota Moris), it doesn't open. Nor does any URL copied from Virgin Radio's website, or Soundportal.at's website.

Okay. This is totally strange. I tried that link and it played from clicking the link, so I saved it as a playlist and it didn't work like you say. So I messed around with the file making some edits and ended up putting it back like it was. And now it works. (And how they got the name of that radio station past the dean, I dunno.)
I'm not sure what's going on. It looks just like any other stream playlist I've got but it loaded up different at first - the whole contents of the playlist file displayed in the xmms playlist window at first. Then it eventually loaded up with the plain complete IP number and it played, translating the IP to 'KUMM: The U-90 Alternative' blah blah.
I'm not sure what to tell you. With me, it never gave me any errors - it just didn't load and then it did.
Anyway - I figure it must be an issue with the station, rather than xmms.

First of all, the reason it has the call letters KUMM is because the K denotes that it's west of the Mississippi River, and UMM is the University of Minnesota Moris's abbreviation. So that's the only thing the school can have for their call letters.
I guess I don't get an "error message" when I try loading the playlist, it's just that it doesn't connect. If you could tell me how you got it to open the urls, then I'd be very happy.
Never mind about telling me how you fixed it, I found out how. I took out the first two lines in the playlist when I opened it with pico, and now I just list the urls that have the port numbers in them like http://mozart.soundportal.at:8000/live128
Thanks for the idea, mate. Now to work on my php problems....
