ODBC connection to MS sql - recommended path?

Running Redhat ver 7.0 and wanting to get data into Microsoft sql databases. Looking into either Unix ODBC or Microsoft ODBC in combination with my existing MicroFocus Cobol applications. Does anyone have experience with setting this up and could give me a recommendation or examples of what they have done? Thanks.

It's been many years ago, but I used to use FreeTDS to connect from Fedora to a mssql server on the same LAN. Any examples would be long gone off my computers though, but as I recall the documentation was pretty adequate and it was pretty easy to set up a connection.
