nvidia driver - API MISMATCH (!)

Hello.

I'm a user of Kubuntu linux, and I have an nvidia 7900GT graphics card.
When trying to install the driver from www dot nvidia dot com, at first it said something about not being able to find X/QT files / directories and gave me a warning. I started it using startx and it worked. when i rebooted my pc i saw X was giving an error about API mismatch between the nvidia module and the X module (one is newer than the other). after installing some dev packages the first warning was gone, but the problem still occurs, so i need to reinstall the driver on every boot!

i already tried installing the driver from apt-get, but it didnt work.

what can i do?

This sounds to be very similar if not the same problem I am currently having on my home computer.

Running Debian Etch, everything was sweet. But I wanted to try out some KVM goodness. so a dist-upgrade from testing to unstable was done. - that was easy, re-installed new nvidia drivers and all was great.

next day turned my PC on again and I got X errors saying that different versions were found between the X and the module.

I have tried re-installing the drivers since then again but alas no luck.

going to have a nother crack at it tonight. Not entirely sure what i'm going to do different at this stage though.

Not sure if your still looking, but if for nothing else then future searches....

I was having the same issues with a nvidia GeForce 6200 card. I downloaded and ran the latest driver. Then I rebooted to a API:Mismatch error. I ended up having to uninstall the default nvidia package.

apt-get remove nvidia-kernel-common

rebooted and was good to go using the new driver

If it's working but in need of tweaking then there is always: dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

Happy trails...

Oh yes forgot to post back with my fix.
Yeah I did the same, used dpkg to uninstall the debian nvidia-glx package, after a reboot the problem was fixed.
