no ssh access / vnc works but can't start new processes
trying to vnc i get:
ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host
i can vnc into the machine, get a preexisting desktop, can browse files etc. but can't start new applications. for example, i go applications / system tools / terminal. the terminal apears to start in the task bar but then disapears. similarly i can't start it using the run application dialog.
the machine is running some server processes, including mysql, httpd, and these seem fine. a monitoring application also run on the server and posts to another host various stats, including cpu load and number of network connections, and both are reasonable.
lastly, one server process start new jvms as it processes remote requests (these are separate java processes) and judging from the application behaviour these start and terminate correctly.
So the system is operational (it's a 24/7 system) but not accessible via ssh anymore. nor can you look into it using vnc.
