No desktop in KDE.

In KDE, there is no desktop at all. It's just a black background with no icons, and clicking on the desktop doesn't do anything. This is probably something that can be easily resolved, but I dunno how to.

Using KDE 3.2 with Gentoo with kernel 2.6.3 (about to be 2.6.5).

Not sure whats happened exactly. Did you recently upgrade KDE?

I had a similar problem when upgrading to the Sarge ediition of Debian.

I had to move the .kde related directorys from the root of my home directory. I put them into a subfolder for safe storage in case it all went pear shaped.

Usual precautions related to backing up data first apply here.

Do this logged in as someone else (Does the dektop appear for them incendently?)

Regards

Richard.

Try clicking on the taskbar for options, there should be a menu you can get to for selecting whether you want icons pn the desktop etc.

That wouldn't be the issue, as even if I told it to not show icons, I should still be able to click on the desktop.

It's been this way since I installed KDE. I'll see if the desktop appears under a new user, but last time I checked it didn't.
