Newbie needs to install KOffice, etc...please help.
I just installed SUSE Linux 10 running with KDE desktop. Okay, now I want to use KOffice instead of OpenOffice which came bundled with Linux. I'd also like to install GIMP and Kopete. Unfortunately I can't get online with my Linux system yet (wireless card not supported) but I've managed to downloaded the tar.bz2 files for each program to a CD, and now I can't figure out what commands to input into the terminal window so I can install them from my CD. I don't even know how to find the files on my CD. The KOffice website has this bunzip2 thing, but I don't understand it. Please help me if you can. I know the code for each program is probably different, but whatever help you can offer would be appreciated! Thanks.
the tar.bz2 extension means it's source code, whice means you have to compile it. Since you said you were new I wouldn't recommend that. Do you have the 3 CD set for SuSe? If so, look on there. I don't use SuSe, so I don't know how to help you more specifically. I think there might be an installation tool in YaST
I used the autoinstallation tool in YaST (YaST - Miscellaneous - Autoinstallation - Software - Package Selection) and found KOffice files on my system. I also found GIMP, but apparently you need Gnome files to install them. I checked the KOffice files found, then saved the new configuration but when I restarted they still weren't installed. Am I doing this wrong???
Let YaST install anything it says the programs you want(Koffice, GIMP, etc) depend on. Did you actually install KOffice, or did you just select it for installation?
I must have just selected it, but I meant to install it. That was the only tool in YaST that said anything about installation. There's also a software management tool, but I'm not sure it's what I need. I checked the 5 SuSE CD set but couldn't find either KOffice or Gimp.

You can add more repos and you should be able to get the packages missing from the 5 CD set. The instructions are on the opensuse website and numerous threads in the Suse forum.
