Need two Linux distros to install but partition problem in FC3
Hello,
I have a 40GB Hard disk and I have partitioned it for 4GB as Primary (c:, FAT32), 10GB as Extended (Logical dos drive as d: ) and the rest is free. I want to use these free space for installing two Linux distros (FC3 and SuSe 9.1).
If I enter my FC3 installation CD for installation, after the selection of keyboard screen it gives two 'BUG' reports which tells that.....
Code:
1. Assertion (heads >0) at disk_dos.C:485 in function probe_partition_for_geom() failed.
There are two buttons 'Ignore' and 'Cancel', if I press cancel the message repeats and if I press ignore then the second 'BUG' report comes....
Code:
2. Assertion (heads <=63) at disk_dos.C:490 in function probe_partition_for_geom() failed.
There are also two buttons 'Ignore' and 'Cancel' and their nature also same except by pressing of ignore button leads me terminate the installation.
I used FC3 in this same system before (the installations disks are also same).
To make you more clear about my disk geometry, I have to tell one thing. My older BIOS detects my 40GB hard disk as 32GB and I was using those 32GB space. Just a few days back, I got a set of SuSe 9.1 and Installed that. Surprisingly, SuSe 9.1 detected my hard disk as 37.3 GB and wanted to take my confermation whether I want to use that space. I agreed to use that space by clicking yes and SuSe confirmed my disk as 37.3 GB disk.
Now, as I am going to install both of the FC3 and SuSe, I am feeling this problem.
To test...I have inserted the Red Hat 9 installation disks, and in RH9 the 'BUG' report converts into 'WARNING' which tells....
Code:
The partition table on /dev/hda is inconsistent. There are many reasons why this might be the case. Often, the reason is that Linux detected the BIOS incorrectly. However this does not appear to be the case here. It is safe to ignore, but ignoring may cause (fixable) problems with some boot loaders, and may cause problems with FAT file systems. Using LBA is recommended.
I have checked my BIOS settings and found that the LBA is on. I proceeded with this installationi and Red Hat permits me to proceed with the installation.
I even tried installing SuSe 9.1, and it does not give any error or warning or any bug report and i can able to install SuSe 9.1. SuSe still recognize my disk as 37.3 GB.
I want to install Fedora first. Please help me how to get rid of the 'BUG' report in FC3 and I can proceed with installing FC3 first.
Just formated the hdd today. Okey, I'll try it again for a complete format and tell you the result. No vital data is there at present. So, I can

Sorry,
As I was keen on refreshing my machine, I misunderstood your language and my
last thread posted is the answer of "How will you format the drive".
Now I am giving the answer to your query....
I formated the drive using Win Me fdisk.
There are One primary partition C: ............4GB for Win & other programs to be installed
One Extended partition of 10GB converted full into logical D: drive
The rest is kept untouched.
I made a 5GB partition for Windows XP, thinking that this would be plenty, but after installing the OS, necessary drivers, and SP2, I only had 200MB left, and I had almost no useful software installed. talk about bloat! I don't know if ME has the same kind of bloat , but I thought I would warn you about my experience.
Installed Win first, then SuSe 9.1 and then Fedora Core 3.
Now the problem is that, After FC3 installation, I am only getting Win and FC3 in
Boot loader menu. SuSe vanished. How to take back SuSe to Grub Boot Loader?
mount ur suse partiton in FC3
cp the
vmlinux-2.6..., System.map. initrd image from /boot of Suse to /boot of FC3
do not overwrite any file
then make an entry in /etc/grub.conf of FC3
like this
------
title Linux-slackware (on /dev/hda2)
root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.11gm129 root=/dev/hda2 ro
initrd /boot/initrd-2.6.11gm129.img
--------
replace all these by actual file names
and also the root partition
just copy those files i mentioned
no need to copying that file grub.conf from suse
also
make entries in the grub.conf of FC3
when grub starts and u choose suse it will look for 3 files
vmlinuz System.map and initrd image files that u should have and u should have entries for that in grub.conf of FC3 and nop need for editing fstab file
EVERYTHING IS WELL AND UNDER CONTROL...................
I have changed those settings according to my hard disk geometry (as you have mentioned in your letter). Copied those to fefora's /boot and edited fedora's /etc/grub.conf as you have stated. Restarted the computer and I have regained 'SuSe 9.1' (I have written /etc/grub.conf in that style) and it started fine. Then again Fedora and it is also working. All three masketiers are there in the Grub Loader.
My best LOVE and WISH to you. Except your step by step guide it could not took place. Your support give me enough courage to go ahead.
