I have searched the forum to an solution to this particular problem and was not able to find a remedy.

I have multiple Red Hat servers on a VPN and I have an app server that needs to connect to a MySQL db on a db server.

mysqld is running on the db server.
nestat -l | grep mysql shows that mysql is listening on port 3306
service iptables status indicates no Firewall is running on either machine
mysql client is installed on the app machine
when I run mysql -h localhost -u myuser -p mydb on the db server I get a connection as expected -- myuser was created to allow connection from any host (Host is a wildcard in the mysql.user table).

I tried to telnet to the db machine on port 3306 and timed out -- so I am starting to believe my problem is related to how our network is setup.

Any ideas or suggestions are more than welcome.

Turns out the problem is a firewall between the boxes ...

Network admins .. sheesh!
