What types of songs are you trying to play, what codec are they in? I assume audio works in other applications?

You first need to setup the yum livna repo by doing

To enable XMMS to play mp3, do
Code:
#yum install xmms-mp3
If you use GNOME and want totem and other GNOME apps to support mp3, wmv, avi etc, do
Code:
#yum install gstreamer-ffmpeg gstreamer-plugins-bad gstreamer-plugins-ugly
If you use KDE and the likes of Kaffeine and Amarok, do
Code:
#yum -y install xine-lib-extras-nonfree
