mplayer plugin will only work as a root user???

I have installed Firefox, mplayer, and the mozilla mplayer plugin. I made the necessary links from my /usr/browser-plugins directory. The flash plugin works fine in both user and root modes. However, the mplayer plugin will only play embedded .mov files and other media files when I am logged in as a root. I read in some forums that there is a chmod 777 command you can run that will fix this problem. Then I read that this chmod method is a security risk. How can I make the mplayer plugin work when I am logged in as a normal user without compromising the security of my computer? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I am using SuSE 9.1 personal and KDE 3.2
