Mplayer displays blank screen

After using my PC for sometime, I am unable to play videos using MPlayer using xv or xvidix video output.

Using XV the video output is a blank black screen but I can hear sound just fine, and trying to use xvidix I get an error message: Error opening/initalizing the selected video device.only
XImage/Shm works, but this does not allow for fullscreen playback. If I reboot the computer it works just fine, but the problem is that rebooting is not an option. Does anyone have any idea as to what the problem maybe, I was thinking maybe some other application has opened the particular video device and hasn't closed it since after reboot it works, but I have absolutely no clue what to do.

kinda odd one.... what does xvinfo report about the ability to use Xvideo extensions? you can always use x11 output with the -zoom option for fullscreen... but that's not too desirable really. does mplayer actaully report in it's output that it couldn't open xvideo output? or just seem to think it's ok?

Hehe it is an odd one, its driving me mad, I ran the console mplayer and I get the following output, it seems that mplayer thinks its fine. I'm not sure what xvinfo is but I ran it and the output follows the Mplayer output first using xv and then using xvidix, the xvidix has the common stuff removed.
(this uses the default xv

also I've found the problem is not mplayer specific, the same blank screen appears when using xine too, also when I was using Xine I changed the video output driver to opengl to try and get it to work, not it crashes as soon as it loads, anyone know what I can do about it?

Same problem

I'm having the same issue. As far as I can tell, the issue seems to be totally and completely random, probably just a result of the buggy-ass radeon drivers.

BUT - check this! if I open up an xterminal as root, then run gmplayer from there, I can use vidix just fine. This sorta makes me think it's a permissions problem, but I'm not certain.

Also, if you don't like that: what distro are you using - and, more importantly, what runlevel are you at (check /etc/inittab). Because if you're at runlevel 3 (multiuser), you can just shut down your x session and restart it without doing a hard reset. Anything you might need to keep open, eg, downloads, you can do from a command prompt with one of the other users (F2-F6). I like it because if all else fails (say, screen corruption) I can just control-alt-F2 and kill the x session from there. I wouldn't try to open more than one x session, though, I've had problems with that.

I know this is kind of an incomplete solution, but I just thought I'd offer what I know. And please, if you've found a solution, tell me!

--UPDATE

Having luck starting mplayer like this: "gmplayer -vo gl2". Hardware scaling and everything. Enjoy.

If your using XORG then add this line to the "device" section of xorg.conf file

Option "XaaNoOffscreenPixmaps"
