Hey peoples, I'm having a issue getting Java installed on my new shiny Redhat 9.0 install.
This is what ive done
Downloaded the .bin from sun (j2re-1_4_1_02-linux-i586-rpm.bin) and run it. It gives me a j2re-1_4_1_02-linux-i586-rpm file, so RPM'ed it. I have a /usr/java/j2re1.4.1_02/plugin/i386/ directory. Inside that directory is three more, a ns4, ns600, and a ns 610. All the documentation ive found thus far has said to take the libjavaplugin_oji.so file inside of the ns 610 directory and create a symbolic link to /home/username/.mozilla/plugins/. I have done this, as i can see the symbolic link in my users /.mozilla/plugin directory highlighted in red.
This is my problem. Java dosent work. hah, In mozillas help->about plugins javas not listed. Hopefully this is just me being stupid. (im sure it is).
I dug around google and these boards and didnt come across anything i havent tried, so here i post.
I personally link java globally in:
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
However, if you want it per user, that's fine. A red link usually means it's broken, so your symlinking either didn't work; you don't have access to a directory in that path; or it's a dynamic directory (probably not).
Just try re-symlinking it:
ln -sf /usr/java/j2re(press tab)/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so /home/username/.mozilla/plu(press tab to ensure you actually have this syntax correct, it will autocomplete if you do)/libjavaplugin_oji.so
This was taken from Mozilla1.3 release notes pertaining to java:
"If you are using the Red Hat 8.x RPMS and you have the Java plugin installed, you must have a version that is also compiled with GCC 3.2. There is a version available from the Blackdown project. Make sure you download the GCC 3.2 version! A version with GCC 3.2 is also rumored to be available from Sun sometime soon."
However on RH 9.0, Galeon doesn't work with Java2 but Moziila web browser does. Also on Mandrake 9.1 both work without even doing the smbolic link. So the situation varies from distribution to distribution. I have Java2 working on Mozilla RH 9.0 at this time.
Note: I disabled Java for Galeon on RH 9.0 but you might not even have the galeon web browser installed yourself, because it is not in the default packages for RH 9.0.
I have a similar problem. I installed j2sdk-1.4.2 beta, and put the path command in ~/.bash_profile, as per the website in the previous post. I am running RedHat 9, and I have both /usr/lib/mozilla and /usr/lib/mozilla-1.2.1, so I symlinked the .so file to both of their plugins directories. My terminal recognizes the javac command, but the plugins do not work. Is there something else I need to do?
