moving my os from my ata disk to a new sata one

Is there a simple way for me to do this? I want to copy my ubuntu gutsy installation from my old 40 gig ata disk to my new 500 gig sata disk, it's in two partition one for the os on / and another on home with all my stuff on. i tried doing a fresh gutsy install on my new disk but theres quite a few problems with it (flash, removable drives, cd writing, bluetooth, torrents, vpn) I've been trying at em for a few days now and slowly I'm making progress but all and my old installation worked perfectly so i was thinking it might be easier to copy it? any ideas anyone? Thanks in advance

Is the harddrives in the same computer..? I don't know if you can copy everything right over.. don't think that will work.. =P but I think that a lots of your setting are in the home catalogue.. and I'm not sure if you just can erase everything in your "new" home catalogue and press so you can se all the hidden files in the "old" home catalogue and just copy it? I have no idea how it works but I would have given it a try.. =P

You might want to read it. I moved my system both / and /home within the same hard drive. It might help you

easy way but from the new slackware based pupy 3.01 then mount your sata and your IDE drives if you need to format the sata unmount it berfor doing it with cfdisk /dev/sda then create the partions make them primary and bootable code is 83 for linux 82 for swap. then write both of then then quit start your program called gparted that way you have a choice of types of file systems.
now copy the stuff from one drive to the other. now you can do a grub install on /dev/your HD. go in there edit the menu1st file. or you can keep your old drive boot form it and configure your lilo or grub to boot from this. like an installer the puppy is running in ram uses any swap partition it can find. If you cfdisk or gparted to format you must have the drive umount[unmounted} you can only copy a system if it is'nt being ran at the time. puppy to the rescue. puppy's running

hmmm, I'm not an expert. but I think you may be able to swap them. You would have to reinstall Grub or whatever your existing bootloader is to the new drive. There is a program called Super Grub Disk That could help you with that, or you could use a live Distro like Knoppix to run the GRUB or grub-install commands to do it.

a page about Super Grub Disk:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzo...bDiskPage.html

ontop of that you would have to edit your /boot/grub/menu.lst file aswell as /etc/fstab before the system would boot properly. again This would probably call for a live CD like Knoppix.

beyond that.. I think you should be good. Though Like I said, my knowledge of such is Very Very Limited. but I'm crazy enough I would give it a go, if not just to see if I could do it...

Sorry, they should put a warning label on Linux, May cause illusions of gander.

Hope this gives you some Ideas;

okie, I've screwed it i think. I moved my old os to the new partirion and changed fstab and grub but I copied all the filed from my home to the new one only I used
Code:
cp -r /whereitwas/* /home/me/
and i think it missed all the hidden files in my home directory like .dmrc and the others, currently it'll not write to that directory because of the permissions and when i do chown on my live cd it'nn not let me because the user doesn't exist on the live cd so I did chmod 777 but it still doesn't let me write to it. I'm gonna try fix this from the terminal but I'm not sure if this is piontless or not, any ideas? Its not over yet

edit:
ooh, I just remembered that I still have the disk with all my old os completly intact, I cant belive I forgot when its sat next to me. How do I copy /home with all the config files? when I click show hidden files on my live cd there aren't any there but I used the same command to copy / and that must be full of hidden files but still boots to the login screen where it doesnt let me log in because of the permissions. The info here's a bit sketchy because I have to boot into windows to use the internet, when I've had a blast on the permissions I'll make notes of what exactly says are the problems when booting if it's still not working after that. Thanks
