moving /home

Hi,

I set up my /home directory under / (did not create a separate partition for /home) Now that it's getting bigger, is it possible to move it (/home) to some other, bigger partition - moving also all the files, config files, settings etc. and leaving the space for the / directory?

thanks

Mmmm - wouldn't advise using move. Setup the new mountpoint, and use "cp -a ..."
That'll get everything, and look after permissions, links, whatever.

Fix up fstab, reboot to ensure it all works, then go back and delete the old data. That way you've always got an on-disk backup in case it goes wrong.

Simple.

Good point I didn't catch they used mv in the first link rather than cp.. guess I shouldn't have skimmed it so fast.

The IBM how-to uses cp recommends copying then changing mount points, testing and only after a successful test removing the original home.. definitely a much safer approach.
