moving /home to /

Hello

I dual boot a 6GB hda for Win98 and 6GB hdb for Mandrake 9.2 and I want to use half of hdb for NetBSD.

Current partitions:
hdb1 / 3.3 GB Jounalised FS ext3
hdb5 swap 494 KB Linux swap
hdb6 /home 2.1 GB Jounalised FS ext3

How do I move Mandrake to the first half of the disk only? What is the way to do this? A pointer will be appreciated, failing that, a step-by-step procedure! Thanks for any help in advance.

Assuming you have the space:

mkdir /home.new
mv /home/* /home.new/
mv /home.new /home
[edit /etc/fstab to remove the reference to mounting /home]

I would break the first mv into a cp and then an rm so you can verify that everything was moved without risking loss of information. ex:
cp -fpv /home/* /home.new/
[verify that everything looks ok -- at the very least compare "du"'s of each]
rm -rvf /home/*
rmdir /home
mv /home.new /home

Also:

When you install the new OS... delete hdb6 and use the second primary partition for netbsd (it won't boot from an extended partition). I figure you knew that but I wanted to make sure.

Thanks frob23 - that all worked a treat.

Problem is, when I installed NetBSD I couldn't resist trying to shave a little room off the Linux slice so that both partitions would be equal in size. Now I can't boot Linux. "No init found - try passing init= to kernel" . Help? I will search on this now but, if you don't mind...
