MooseFS, fuse or zlib destroyed Gnome

Linux version: Debian 5 "Lenny"; freshly installed
Packages installed just prior to failure: Fuse, zlib, gcc and MooseFS.

Error messages from gnome:
1)"Nautilus can't be used now, due to an unexpected error from Bonobo when attempting to register the file manager view server"
2)"The panel could not register with the bonobo-activation server (error
code: 3) and will exit.It may be automatically restarted."

Error messages from /var/log/messages:
Upon starting gnome programs, they immediately crash with a message similar to: "Sep 5 23:24:42 Poseidon kernel: [ 64.030486] nm-applet[3255]: segfault at 1c4f ip b6efd70d sp bff74708 error 4 in libc-2.7.so[b6e87000+155000]".

I recently installed Debian in place of Slackware on my system (I enjoy experimenting with different systems) and everything worked fine until I tried to install MooseFS. I used apt-get to install gcc and ran ./configure, make and make install to install Fuse, zlib and Moose. To make things even more humorous, none of these programs are even running when the problem occurs. Other side effects are an instability to other programs, such as Firefox, that I am using on kde, and all gnome programs, such as gnucash, just crash and lead to a log message similar to the one mentioned above and a command line message of "segmentation fault". Oh, I used the Gnome slackbuild on my old system and MooseFS ran just fine.

I thank you in advance for your help.

sounds like bad RAM or you've hosed your install. What's in your sources.list ?

I just recently experienced a segfault very similar (same location) to the one described. Using gdb I eventually tracked it down to the xml parser. It was calling strncmp, I think, and the actual segfault was happening in libc. So I upgraded libxml2 (2.6.21->2.6.27) and that problem was fixed. I also did a few package rebuilds for things that were dependent.

Incidentally the same thing caused problems in kde whilst running firefox. It was then that I realised the problem was the same one that stopped gnome in its tracks.

Both gnome and firefox are running fine again now.
