Monitor greying out, almost crashing but not quite. Stays grey for up to a minute then back to normal.

I don't know if this is hardware or software related. Sometimes during grey-out i get a message "script is running" with option "continue" or "debug script" or "stop script". I always stop script which closes browser. This happens most with Firefox, but happened yesterday in Chrome.

What's going on and how do i prevent it?

thanks

The grey screen means the application is not responding. Happens sometimes with websites that have poorly written scripts or heavy with flash player stuff.

Thanks, blueh20. So, what do i do? I have already ditched Firefox in favor or Chrome, but this grey-out happened once in Chrome. This does not happen in any Windows i've used. Is this strictly a Ubuntu issue? Is there a fix?

Windows will say "(Not Responding)" in the title bar rather than the window turning grey, but the cause is the same. Some script or plugin is eating up system resources faster than the machine can cope with. Generally the only solutions are to disable whatever plugin is the cause, or stop the script, or just wait for the system to come back.

Thanks again, blueh20. Since this issue happens far less with Chrome than Firefox, can i assume that a browser can do a better job of handling these scripts? If that's so, then there may be a soft ware fix. When this happens (I'm using Ubutu 16.10, but saw problem with v15) a window pops up asking if i want to "debug" the script...how can that be done? This issue happens with main stream web sites, especially with videos but never with U-tube.

it is the script that the websight is using not the web browser itself from my understanding.

Hi, BW-userx, i'm far from being a geek but i think browsers have something to do with this grey-out issue, Firefox would grey-out couple times a day while Chrome has only done it once. I've deleted Firefox, am hoping for the best.

I've never had gray out, but I have had screen freeze due to scripts
