Can't speak for Mac but even my dinosaur can fast forward through commercials now. I hope they keep that for regular season...except that being two hours behind the fave team is powerful motivation to get out of work early.

dear daftcat et al,

mlbviewer and mplayer now work well for me. i dump the stream via dumpstream and play it with mplayer. forwarding works very well also, much better than last season.

so thanks so much for the work!

here are two things i noticed in the last week:
- is the displayed time for mlbviewer still off by one hour?
- will mlbviewer with rtmpdump be able to play the 12ookbit stream? so far, only the 4ook and 8ook are implemented.

i am keeping my fingers crossed that mlb.tv will not change anything for the upcoming season so you all will not have to work around them and dedicate your time to other things and we can all enjoy mlb.tv on linux!

thanks so much,
markus

ps: daftcat, i haven't forgotten about the $$. early next month, i swear!

Off by an hour seems to occur when switching days. I have no idea why. I can look yet again. Quick fix is to restart mlbviewer to the day you want using startdate=mm/dd/yy argument (if not today.)

I plan to choose 1200 and 800 during regular season but in spring training, not all games have a 1200K stream. I don't want to invest too much code there until I know how regular season will be.

More on the time...

We get the times in the grid.xml (listings file) in Eastern Time (New York time where the MLB offices are.) We first convert that to GMT. There's a check to see if the date falls within daylight saving time to figure out whether we're going to add 4 hours or 5 hours to arrive at GMT. Finally from GMT, we apply a time offset based on local timezone. Yesterday, the US began daylight saving time so you may be seeing it off by an hour if you haven't restarted mlbviewer since Sat or before. Also, for some mysterious reason, we seem to gain an hour when we switch days. I've tried many times to figure out why this is. I'll try once more. Easy workaround is that the initial startup time is correct so restart mlbviewer (using startdate= argument if you have to.)

Also there was a bug fix a couple of weeks back where I had the 2010 dates for daylight saving time entered as year 2009. I fixed this so make sure you're running most current svn revision of mlbviewer.

Harumph! Now that we're in daylight saving time, I can't reproduce the off-by-one hour bug. I guess just restart your mlbviewer and make sure you don't have a time_offset= in your ~/.mlb/config (or that you add an hour to that offset if you need that parameter.)

I was looking at this a couple weeks ago wondering why my times were off. I found out that python time.daylight was reporting a non-zero value even though it wasn't daylight saving time. time.timezone and time.altzone both reported the correct GMT offsets for my timezone, but mlbviewer was thinking it was DST because python said it was. Now that it is DST, the times are correct.

At the time, I figured it was just some configuration issue with python and my computer, and since DST would be coming soon, I figured it would resolve itself quickly.

Actually, I believe that rtmpdump does grab the entire stream as fast as the network will allow, but only for prior archived games. If the game is live right now, it will only stream in realtime. But for archived games, you should be able to get them much quicker.

Thanks for the info, I guess I'll have to try it out anyhow. How about flvstreamer? I gathered that this is the better tool from this thread...is that correct?

I've been using rtmpdump 1.6 with live and archived games flawlessly. I tried flvstreamer and while I could get mlbviewer to call it, it would sometimes never start the stream. Rather than fool with it, I just went back to rtmpdump and haven't had problems since.

yeah maybe it's my rtmpdump too possibly... i'm not worried about it. more wondering what will be in store for the season...

it looks like mlb-at-bat is gonna start streaming ST games soon... do you think that means their architecture is gonna stay the same? I don't see why they would change their web-based system when at-bat is gonna be set to go, seems like a lot of work for 2 weeks of ST games (on iphone).

edit; of course much will depend on nextdef plugin. if they change that around, then a linux-compatible version will need to be released (by mlb).... I honestly don't use the nextdef for the first month or two, it's too unstable.

here's hoping!

The nice thing about flvstreamer is that it is actively maintained once again. And as of version 1.8, it no longer needs to be patched for live streams. I've tested with version 2.1c1 and it works just fine. The only problem I had with it was there was a lot more debug output in rtmpdump to tell me when things weren't working. There might be an #define in flvstreamer to get the same level of debug. I haven't looked at the source that much.

I'll believe it when I see it. So far, my AB app still says "Coming soon" but no word on the forums what that means. Apparently, the few snippets received from mobile tech support makes mlb.tv support (yes, they are separate teams....shudder!) look like gurus. People keeping emailing mobile support "when is video going to be ready?" and keeping getting cryptic replies back about making sure the iPhone is set for 12-hour clock.

thanks for everybod's replies.

i assume the reason for the time being off on mlbviewer is because daylight savings time has not started yet in europe.

i understand you would like to wait for mlb.tv's official release around opening day until you tweak around with mlbviewer, daftcat. otherwise it could just mean wasted time for you.

has anyone had an error yesterday while trying to watch live games? while archived games work very well with me, mlbviewer wasn't able to locate the stream. i will try again tonight and if it comes up again i will post the message here.

thanks everyone!
