Midnight Commander --console output

A long time ago I had Norton Commander for DOS. I consider it to one of the best programs ever made. Now of course we have mc, and for that I am grateful.
I remember that NC allowed the 'Layout' option allowed me to have more than one line for output. I thought mc did that once, but my memory is a little foggy.
Anyway the adjustment for 'console output' has been grayed out seemingly forever. I cannot figure out how to activate that.
Can anyone help me with this?

Try File Commander. It and MC each have their advantages, so I use both. In FCL have have about 8 output lines currently set.
