mgetty -> modem doesn't respond

I wanted to read out (and later set new) the settings of my US-Robotics/3COM modem. So I typed in a terminal
Code:
mgetty /dev/ttyS0
and the diodes on the modem brieftly flickered (sending and receiving). When I sent ATZ or AT&M or ATI5 I expected a resounding "OK." or the settings but nothing happened. In the end I had to kill the thing by typing <CTRL+C>.

"man" and "info" say mgetty is "intelligent" but nothing about responses. What did I do wrong?

I think that minicom would work better than mingetty for what you are trying to do.
