modem does not respond

Just installed Mandrake 7.2 distro and am having modem probs.
Using the KDE desktop as root I set up a kppp account. When I use the dialer I get a message first that "modem is ready" then after a few seconds it changes to "sorry modem does not respond". Being a total newbie I've tried everything I can think of, which isn't much. I have a us robotics hardware isa voice/fax modem. I am booting 3 partitions: Dos 622, Win98se, Linux. Help!

Just? Mandrake 7.2 is really rather old. I very strongly suggest you get 8.1 which has numerous improvements and security fixes.

Am waiting for the 8.1 Mandrake cds, too slow to dl. Will I be able to install over 7.2 or should I do a clean install? I don't know how to do anything if it's not in an x window yet. Thanks

You can do an "upgrade" install, but I tend to format everything (except the /home partition) and do a clean install of the OS.
