I am assuming you are using Cinnamon or some other desktop environment.

To install Mate from Software Center:
Go to Menu>Administration>Software Center
Search for Mate and install package "mint-meta-mate".

From command line do:
"sudo apt-get install mint-meta-mate" without the quotes.
You will be prompted to enter your password and Mate will be installed.

Reboot and select Mate as your new session.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, but package mintmetamate not in my software box. Would it be in the Synaptic packages? I haven't looked...

Make sure you put in the dashes: mint-meta-mate

Have you tried to install from the Terminal?
Code:
sudo apt-get install mint-meta-mate
If you run this command in the Terminal, do you get any errors? If so, please post them in a reply.

Alternatively, you can look for package: mate-desktop
Or, from terminal:
Code:
sudo apt-get install mate-desktop

Tried both commands .. error message runs
Unable to fetch some archives maybe apt-get update (I did that) or try with --fix-missing?
The plot thickens

Further to above... tried again at the terminal, and this time it worked. Downloaded but I do not get to choose a desktop, even though the log on is not set to auto...have I missed a step? Thanks
