Man page does'nt show up. Kernel 2.6.9, Slackware 10.0

When I type e.g. man ncftp I get the following error:

Code:
Error executing formatting or display command.
System command /bin/bzip2 -c -d /usr/man/cat1/ncftp.1.bz2 | /usr/bin/less -is exited with status 256.
If I type /bin/bzip2 -c -d /usr/man/cat1/ncftp.1.bz2 alone, without /usr/bin/less -is, the man page opens, but just as text in terminal, i mean, I cannot scroll or do something i could do with that less, whatever it is. I think it all started after I had recompiled kernel. With the default Slack 10.0 kernel (2.4.26) everything was allright, so I think I missed something during the configuration of kernel. What could that be?

I see you didn't understand what I meant I mean man page doesn't show up as it should: with that "line x of x" in the lower left corner and so on. The program that should be used to view the man pages (less or whatever it is) doesn't start .

do you have less installed??? try doing "which less" from the command line to see if it finds the binary.

It's a dodgy udev rule in Slackware 10.0 (it's fixed in -current, and I think it may be fixed in the security updates for 10.0)

To quote from http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...10#post1249510 (see also http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...5&pagenumber=1):

Quote:
Well, there is a problem viewing man-pages, seems to be in slackware.

But this could be corrected just by opening the file:
/etc/udev/rules.d/udev.rules

locating a line that looks like
KERNEL="tty[p-za-e][0-9a-f]*", NAME="tty/s%n", SYMLINK="%k"

and if found change "tty/s%n" to "pty/s%n".
