Is there a man page on how to use man page?

Hello,

I am learning Linux and I often see references to manpages. I read what I can but I really do not under stand how the pages work.

How do I bring up pages that I want rather than just getting lucky typing in names sometimes?

What do the names/number format mean (IE clear(8) manpage)? What is that 8?

Is there a main directory where I can browse the available manpages? This would be easier than having to know the name of the file.

Thanks for giving complete answers.

Mmmmm..... must admit that the manpage does not answer some of the questions you ask. Maybe this will be a better place for the info you are looking for:

Hope this helps even better
