lost mouse since installed modem driver

I use Mandrake. Since installing a driver for an internal PCI modem (which didn't work) I no longer have use of my mouse in KDE or ICE. The startx error messages at the console are along the lines of "Can't find serial mouse"

(KDE / ICE do start though).

thanks for any advice

Maybe you can adjust the setting for the modem in the BIOS CMOS. Back when serial mice were common we would configure a modem on COM4 and the mouse on COM1 or COM2.
