loading songs onto the ipod from linux breaks ipod

ok so i have been a faithful linux user for almost a year now and i have decided to stay with ubuntu on my laptop because i broke all other ones. but i open amarok an plug in my ipod and get it all configured but it says that it can not load songs onto ipod. then i tried Rhythmbox but it can only take the songs off of my ipod but it can't play any of them so i play them all in amarok. then to get the songs onto my ipod i installed gtkpod and tried to upload the songs but it turns out that my ipod cant play them because of the format, so i re-import my cd's to linux using the .wma encoder and then when i load them onto the ipod it can play the songs... yay... then i try to play any of my old songs and they all don't work and my ipod has been partitioned into 2 different partitions. took my about an hour to get a windows comp of mine to work again. then i reformated my ipod and it still barely works and lots of the songs stop playing again so i reformat it again and again and again and again now it finally works again so i am just wondering but what did linux do to my ipod. and by the way i have a first gen color ipod.

There is a Linux advocacy site that has some information about iPods and Linux. It is located at http://lottalinuxlinks.com . Go to the podcasts and then listen to podcast 22.

http://lottalinuxlinks.com/podcast/index.html

That has information about using iPods with Linux and resetting the iPod to it's factory defaults. It has something to do with putting the iPod into sleep mode and waking it up a certain way. Your user manual should have details. The web site also has the following link to more information about iPods on Linux.
