Question E-Book Readers - Linux

With the growth of Project Gutenberg and other similar projects on the net, interest in E-Book readers such as rocket reader is on the increase considering their advantages of convenient transportation and reduced eye strain etc., However, lack of Linux software for these devices seems to be a serious limitation. Is any Linux software/OS for these under development ?

Please share any other related info.

Thanks in advance.

Question Linux E-Book Reader ?

I have been reading the E-Books as such in my browser last week. The fonts were a little extra small. Hence, after three days I endedup with red, watery and irritated eyes. Is there any Ebook reader for Linux, specially for the desktop ?

Thanks in advance.

You can try Adobe Acrobat Reader. Use LCD displays. They are easier to read text than CRT displays.

I thought it was just me who thought the text in Linux seemed smaller than normal. Try installing the MS fonts package to. That'll come in handy for your browser.

Direct link to MS fonts package:
http://rpm.borgnet.us/10.1/media/RPM...bgn.noarch.rpm

Homepage of MS fonts package:

I am a bit lost in this regard. What if the E-Book is not a pdf document, then Adobe can't be used can it ? Most E-Books that I access are in text format.

The exact link for this ebook reader would be appreciated.

Thanks for this info. Does MS fonts mean Microsoft Fonts ? Also, I have Debian. Is there a Debian Package for MS Fonts ?

Code:
apt-get install x-ttcidfont-conf msttcorefonts
Don't forget to add the following line in the font section in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Code:
 FontPath "/var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType"

There a couple different programs that can read text e-books like the ones from Project Gutenburg.

"Manage and read EBooks produced by Project Gutenberg."
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guten/

"Gutenbrowser provides an easy way to search for, download, and read free classic etext books from Project Gutenberg." This one is the one I like best.
http://freshmeat.net/projects/gutenbrowser/

This page has several different ones:
SourceForge.net: Search
http://sourceforge.net/search/

EText Reader - linux.techass.com
http://linux.techass.com/projects/etr/

OOPs sorry missed the part about E-book Reader devices.

GREAT POST !!!! This is what I was looking for. Thanks for sharing. Please add the part about the E-Book Reader Devices.

Also I see that you are a Debian user. How come there are no Debian packages for the EText readers discussed above ?

Thanks.

Vijay (So far this issue is concerned I am a newbie)

Gutenbook and Gutenbrowser are both in the unstable repository of Debian.

"gutenbook (0.1.10-4) [non-US]
Graphical document reader for Gutenberg Etext documents"
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/non-US/

"gutenbrowser (3:0.6.8.3-3)"
gutenbrowser is a reader for etexts produced by Project Gutenberg. It integrates with KDE. You only need the libraries to run it though.
http://packages.debian.org/unstable/source/gutenbrowser

The Google Linux search engine is great.
http://www.google.com/linux

It is all a matter of knowing what to search for, then in Debian either adding the right repository or knowing how to compile from source.

Here is my progress/status so far:

For gutenbook and gutenbrowser I used distro DSL Vs 9.3.
a) For gutenbook it said there are brken links and hence didn't proceed.
b) For gutenbrowser I got a file not found error lunX*.so.2 (searched there are no packages for this file on Debian, also this file doesn't exist on my system.

c) For etr, I used Knoppix hd Install. Version (about one or two years old). First I tried to run the .exe file with WINE. It installed but didn't create an icon on the desktop. I was asked to click on this icon to start the program.
I also tried the tar.gz file. Several error messages at the make stage.

d) Also tried to run ybook from snapjock.com under Wine. It loads well, but when I try to load any file, it shuts down.

Ybook reads txt/rtf/html files and plain pleasure to use for reading. it needs wine/cedega/crossover-office.
