lilo + raid1 = 99 99 99 99 99 ....

Hello people

This is the sequal to http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=494430
For those that arent interested in looking at that thread: In a pinch I couldnt boot a raid system. But that had to do with hardware.

Now it's the time for the software to make my life displeased. Also this time I searched for answers for days. So thats why i decided to post another thread. So please bare with me, and refrain from giving me answers to outdated tutorials and howto's, vast manpages or incoherent forum threads.

Once my system boots I get lilo spitting out half a screen with 99. The /boot is also on the same partition as /. That would be /dev/md3. md3 consists of /dev/sda3 and /dev/sdb3 which both have a bootable flag toggled.

I tried 'lilo -x mbr', plain 'lilo' and many others. In my lilo.conf
boot=/dev/md3
root=/dev/md3
are written in.
I also tried with
extra-boot-option = /dev/sda,/dev/sdb.

But all without success. Always the same 99 99 99 99 etc.

When running lilo it also gives warning on /dev/{md3,sda,sdb} not being on the first disk. True. I have an ide-disk (/dev/hda) which has been set undetected in the BIOS.

Im out of options and full of despair. I have been clobbering for 3 weeks now. Oh yah: /dev/md3 is raid1

So, can someone tell me what I must do just to get this system to boot. B/c i dont have a clue anymore and am tired of searching for answers.

Thanks in advance

The procedure goes something like this:

Code:
# mount -t ext3 /dev/md3 /mnt
# chroot /mnt
# vi /etc/lilo.conf
/etc/lilo.conf should look something like this:

Code:
boot = /dev/md3
raid-extra-boot = mbr-only
vga = 773
image = /boot/vmlinuz
  root = /dev/md3
  label = Linux
  read-only
Code:
# lilo

Thanks for replying. But it didnt help. Too bad. I got so frustrated I did a reinstall and vi'd /etc/lilo.conf. Seeing 99 99 99 for the 99th time in one day is too much.

The next message will probably be written from the asylum. ****! Is it me, or is it down to impossible making RAID and Linux unified? At this point I am really craving for a laidback Windows install
