Kprinter works for one user only

I have Suse 9.1 and an HP5550 printer, which I plug into my usb ports. I can print using OpenOffice, but not other software, including thunderbird and firefox. When I use the Printing Manager in my KMenu, I see it is set to Generic Unix LPD Print System (default).

My family and I have what appear to be identical accounts. We all belong to the same group and otherwise have similar permissions. If I try to open the Printing Manager from my daughter's account, it locks up. When she tries to print from Open Office, the KPrinter menu pops up, but the subsequent window has no printers to select, and is using CUPS. That window locks up and sometimes she has to logout to continue.

What must I change?
