Knetworkmanager reports offline

bypassing network manager causes apps. thinking your offline when your online
I have a problem when I bypass knetworkmanager using a script to call WPA_supplicant and dhclient so I can connect to a secured network that KnetworkManager doesn't support the settings for, my system will think it's off line. Well any programs </applications> that depend on knetworkmananger's little flag that states that I'm online, don't think I'm online because knetworkmanager doesn't think I'm online. Is their some way of setting up ketworkmanager so it will detect incoming connections and determine the connection is live then report the system as bing online. At least this way, any programs depend on knetworkmanagers online connection flag will see that knetworkmanager is online and function normally.

So with that problem stated here's another. Same back end issue but a good example.

As far as I understand Kontact has an off line mode like Firefox. I use a script to connect to my secured wireless network </can't figure out wpa gui and it breaks every thing :- ( not what I'm here for> using the script makes knetworkmanager think that I'm not connected to any wireless networks. when I use Firefox I always have to switch from off line mode to online mode. My investigation in to the mater shows that I can use Kontact on my home wireless (using knetworkmanager to connect) and send and receive email just fine. It's only when I use my script to connect to my secured wireless network that the problem occurs, scene I'm bypassing knetworkmanager, some of my applications think that I'm not actually online. Is their a setting that I can set in Kontact so it will act as tho I'm online and try to communicate any way.. Like Firefox has an offline mode you can set to online?

I've tried wicd but had no luck, couldn't get it configured right.
If their is a better package outheir that will work with my Distro, "Kubuntu" that will allow me to not only use a GUI to connect to my wireless secured network but also detect any already connected networks and tell all of my other apps that I'm connected that would be great.

Thanks
